Safety meets speeds: how next-gen sensors free robots from cages

Summary

As the boundaries between robots and collaborative robots (cobots) fade, the need for fast, agile, and uncaged robot systems grows rapidly.

Today’s cobots typically rely on power- and force-limiting mechanisms for safety, stopping upon contact with an obstacle.

However, this inherently restricts their speed and cycle time, as high-speed operation would make collisions unsafe.

Industries aiming to deploy high-performance robots in open workspaces—and humanoids that are meant to emerge in our everyday environments—demand higher speeds, requesting a new generation of perception and sensing.
