Broadband Optical Lab

The Broadband Optical Lab at IDLab, an imec research group embedded in Ghent University and the University of Antwerp,&nbsp;is a state-of-the-art test and measurement environment for the characterization of high-speed, high-frequency and mixed-signal electronic circuits and (sub-)systems for wireless, wired and fiber-optic communication or instrumentation.

Potential of thin-film-based image sensors unlocked with the integration of a pinned-photodiode structure&nbsp;

For the first time, researchers from imec succeeded in integrating a pinned photodiode structure in thin-film image sensors.

With the addition of a pinned-photogate and a transfer gate, the superior absorption qualities of thin-film imagers -beyond one µm wavelength- can finally be exploited, unlocking the potential of sensing light beyond the visible in a cost-efficient way.

This novel approach opens doors to diverse applications, from autonomous driving to environmental monitoring.&nbsp;

In the quest for sustainable energy, solar power stands as a vital player, yet its unpredictable nature challenges accurate energy (and financial) yield predictions.

Within their partnership at EnergyVille, imec and Hasselt University have tackled this obstacle head-on, through a groundbreaking Energy Yield Model.

Unlike traditional models, this bottom-up approach intricately considers light, temperature, and electrical dynamics within solar panels. It offers unparalleled precision and can become a beacon for efficient solar energy utilization.

This article explores the Energy Yield Model, from its core components to real-world applications, and is a must-read for those passionate about advancing solar technology.

The demonstration of a non-destructive read operation for FeCAPs presents a milestone towards compute-in-memory applications

Ferroelectric capacitors (FeCAPs) are an energy-efficient alternative to resistive types of memories for analog compute-in-memory (CiM) applications.

However, since conventional read operations for FeCAPs are destructive, the read endurance is limited by the write endurance, which is insufficient for CiM.

Imec and the Georgia Institute of Technology have demonstrated a non-destructive read operation for the first time, enabling fully decoupled read and write endurance.

They achieved a non-destructive read endurance of &gt;1011 and a capacitive memory window of 8.7 (at 0V) – the largest values reported for FeCAPs.

Towards scalable single-molecule sensing for genomics and proteomics&nbsp;

Researchers at imec unveil a pioneering bio-molecular sensor device – a nanowell FET, an upgraded version of their earlier FinFET biosensor.&nbsp;

The device features a 25 nm size nanowell in the center of a 35-40 nm wide silicon FinFET, enhancing molecular detection sensitivity, with near-ideal electrical properties.&nbsp;

Additionally, binding inside the nanowell may become self-limiting, which could enable single-molecule sensing.&nbsp;
