We are seeking a highly motivated Development Engineer to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and executing characterization strategies—such as electrical, optical, and morphological tests—to evaluate, optimize, and monitor device performance and process stability. You will work closely with process integration, device, and metrology teams to support both technology development and on-demand investigations. The role also includes hands-on lab processing using specialized equipment that replicates key semiconductor manufacturing steps, enabling proof-of-concept experiments and rapid prototyping outside the fab environment.

Within D2TeCT (Device Design Tapeout Characterization and Testing), our mission is to Innovate and excel in semiconductor technology through comprehensive device & components design, precise tape-out, rigorous electro-optical testing, and meticulous components characterization. 

What you will do

  • After appropriate training and certifications, you will be working in imec labs and clean rooms handling sensitive equipment and materials. 
  • Support process optimization, electrical and optical test for root-cause investigations, and yield improvement activities. 
  • You will be part of a shift schedule that may include early and late shifts (no nights) or standard day shifts, with regular weekend coverage on a rotational basis. 
  • This is a fully onsite position, based at imec Leuven.  
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including integration, process development, metrology, reliability, and failure analysis. 
  • Present findings, reports, and recommendations to technical and management teams. 
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of methodologies and lab capabilities. 
  • Develop and maintain process documentation, control plans, and characterization protocols. 
  • Due to the hands-on nature of the work, physical presence on site is required. 
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment.

Who you are

  • You hold a Master’s degree, in Chemistry, Physics, Electronics, or a related scientific field, or, alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree combined with over 3 years of experience in semiconductor process technology 
  • You are interested in learning semiconductor integration and device characterization techniques.  
  • You are accurate, focused, and able to deliver results that meet specific targets and deadlines. Your reasoning skills enable you to identify and solve problems effectively. 
  • You work in an organized manner and can manage your time efficiently to handle multiple tasks and deadlines. 
  • You are enthusiastic, flexible, and eager to learn new technologies and methods. You are adaptable and can adjust to changing priorities and requirements. 
  • You have a sense of urgency and take the initiative to address issues and improve processes proactively. 
  • You have excellent interpersonal skills and can collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve common goals. 
  • You have a high drive to work in a highly motivated and multicultural environment. 
  • Given the international character of Imec, a good knowledge of English is a must. 
  • Additional Preferred Qualifications: 
    • Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication equipment and processes is a plus. 
    • Experience with cleanroom procedures and laboratory work, highly appreciated. 
    • Proficiency in using data analysis tools and software (e.g., Power BI, Python, SharePoint) for detailed evaluation and reporting. 
    • Strong technical writing skills for preparing comprehensive reports and documentation. 
    • Basic knowledge of project management practices to assist in coordinating research projects and timelines. 
    • Experience with statistical process control (SPC) and DOE. 
    • Knowledge of the Dutch language is a plus.
