Become part of our Lab Operations & Coordination department as a Development Engineer, where you’ll help drive customer and project success through hands-on support in our XPLORE Lab. You’ll contribute to a wide range of lab activities that replicate semiconductor processes on a smaller scale — from sample preparation, thin film deposition, growing, evaporation, sputtering, etching, photolithography techniques to wire bonding, dicing and device characterization, with an eye on general lab coordination and process support. This role offers a dynamic environment with varied tasks, making it ideal for someone who enjoys working across multiple technologies and collaborating closely with research teams.

What you will do

  • After appropriate training and certifications, you will be working in imec labs handling sensitive equipment and materials.
  • Support process optimization and development for proof of concepts, root-cause investigations, and yield improvement activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including integration, process development, metrology, reliability, and failure analysis.
  • Present findings, reports, and recommendations to technical and management teams.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of methodologies and lab capabilities.
  •  Develop and maintain process documentation, control plans, and characterization protocols.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment.
  • You will be part of a shift schedule that may include early and late shifts (no nights) or standard day shifts, with regular weekend coverage on a rotational basis.
  • Due to the hands-on nature of the work, physical presence on site is required.
  • This is a fully onsite position, based at imec Leuven.

Who you are

  • You hold a Master’s degree, in Chemistry, Physics, Electronics, or a related scientific field, or, alternatively, a Bachelor’s degree combined with over 3 years of experience in semiconductor process technology.
  • You are interested in learning semiconductor integration and device characterization techniques.
  • You are accurate, focused, and able to deliver results that meet specific targets and deadlines. Your reasoning skills enable you to identify and solve problems effectively.
  • You work in an organized manner and can manage your time efficiently to handle multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • You are enthusiastic, flexible, and eager to learn new technologies and methods. You are adaptable and can adjust to changing priorities and requirements.
  • You have a sense of urgency and take the initiative to address issues and improve processes proactively.
  • You have excellent interpersonal skills and can collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams to achieve common goals.
  • You have a high drive to work in a highly motivated and multicultural environment.
  • Given the international character of imec, a good knowledge of English is a must.
  • Additional Preferred Qualifications:
    • Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication equipment and processes is a plus.
    • Experience with laboratory work and procedures, highly appreciated.
    • Proficiency in using data analysis tools and software (e.g., Power BI, Python, SharePoint) for detailed evaluation and reporting.
    • Strong technical writing skills for preparing comprehensive reports and documentation.
    • Basic knowledge of project management practices to assist in coordinating research projects and timelines.
    • Experience with statistical process control (SPC) and DOE.

    • Knowledge of the Dutch language is a plus.
