How silicon photonics technology can address the networking bandwidth demand in cloud datacenters and AI/ML applications

An imec view

Summary

In this interview, Joris Van Campenhout, fellow and director of the Optical I/O program at imec, outlines how imec and its partners address the networking bandwidth demand in both cloud datacenters and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) applications.

For cloud datacenter networks, scaling to 1.6T pluggable optics drives the development of optical components with increasing baud rates.

However, for AI/ML systems, stringent requirements for bandwidth density, power consumption and latency will require a different, more disruptive approach.
