MECOVI

Collaborative Visualization in the Medical World

Smart health logo

The research partners in the MECOVI project are jointly developing a digital environment for local and online collaboration in multidisciplinary medical teams (MDTs). During MDT meetings, this environment should enable the easy and intuitive interpretation and visualization of data from multiple sources and in multiple locations in order to facilitate cooperation between healthcare providers. This new solution will be widely applicable and integrate optimally with current clinical practices.

Multidisciplinary Cooperation within Medical Teams

Healthcare is becoming increasingly complex. In addition to increasing medical knowledge, the diagnostic and treatment options are also multiplying exponentially. Multidisciplinary cooperation has become a must as a result of advanced specialization in various disciplines. Yet, MDTs are often prevented from working efficiently because of the limited possibilities to integrate all patient data in the consultation, due to physical distances between team members or due to visualization technology that is not suitable for a consultation environment.

System Integration

MECOVI is seeking new technology components that facilitate medical consultation. In order to achieve this, on the one hand, the use of technology that Barco has already developed for business consultation is supported as much as possible. On the other hand, MECOVI is building on the knowledge about reporting of medical data developed by icoMetrix and at Leuven University Hospital.

Specifically, MECOVI is researching state-of-the-art web technologies to allow easy integration with other systems. In addition, MECOVI is studying safe and user-friendly access controls for online meetings. Finally, MECOVI is looking at new ways to interpret and visualize patient data on different scales so the data can be used effectively during a consultation meeting.

The solution will then be applied in a limited number of clinical scenarios, starting with oncology and neurology.

A Sustainable Healthcare Model

MECOVI opens up development propects for all project partners. On a broader social level, the project also brings added value: by improving the decision making process in MDTs in a cost-effective way, it contributes to an affordable and high quality healthcare.

“MECOVI is developing a new concept that supports both local and remote cooperation within multidisciplinary medical teams.”
