Design Optimization of Piezoelectric MEMS Resonators for Frequency-Based Readout

Master internship - Leuven | Just now

Bridging piezoelectric resonator design and read-out circuit compatibility.

Piezoelectric MEMS and NEMS resonators are widely used in sensing applications due to their high frequency stability, small footprint, and compatibility with microfabrication technologies. In practical systems, resonator performance is not determined solely by mechanical properties, but also by the ability to interface reliably with electronic read-out circuits.

In particular, stable frequency read-out requires resonator designs that exhibit a robust and well-defined electrical response when connected to a read-out integrated circuit (ROIC). This necessitates careful optimization of resonator geometry, material configuration, and electrode layout.

The objective of this master internship is to investigate and optimize piezoelectric resonator designs using COMSOL Multiphysics. Finite-element simulations will be employed to analyze the electromechanical response in the frequency domain and to guide design choices that ensure compatibility with practical read-out circuits.
