Silicon photonics is a highly promising technology for enabling datacenters to deal more quickly and more economically with immense quantities of data. This technology can also make a difference on a smaller scale: by using photonic components as sensors, for example. Or to speed up the transfer of data between chips or even inside a chip itself.
Typically, new technologies are very expensive and not really affordable for smaller players in the marketplace. This includes SMEs or companies without much experience in the field, or also research groups. Imec’s silicon photonics platform is definitely of interest for this particular audience. Philippe Absil* and Carl Das** explain in more detail in this short video.
