Energy technologies

The world is looking for more sustainable ways to generate, store and convert energy. Imec is working on innovative solutions to do just that.

Energy is crucial for our industry and our everyday life. But we can’t keep on producing our energy by burning fossil fuels. Together with deforestation and industrial activities, this contributes to the rise of greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere. And to a rise in the global surface temperature, ultimately leading to dramatic climate change.

An energy transition is needed.

Imec takes up its responsibility by researching and developing innovative technologies for generating, storing, and converting energy in a planet-friendly way. All this is done in the framework of EnergyVille.

Imec’s energy portfolio

Imec paves the way towards a distributed and sustainable energy system by developing:

  • Photovoltaic technology to convert sunlight into electricity.
  • Batteries to store the electricity from intermittent renewable energy sources like solar and wind, and to drive electric mobility.
  • More efficient electrolysis technologies to produce green hydrogen and valuable molecules, to be used as (long-term) energy storage, industrial feedstock, etc.
  • Gallium nitride technology for power electronics to enhance the efficiency of renewable energy systems like solar inverters and wind turbine converters and to be used in electric cars.
  • Digital technology and artificial intelligence for energy systems and energy management.

EnergyVille is a collaboration between the Flemish research partners KU Leuven, VITO, imec and UHasselt in the field of sustainable energy and intelligent energy systems. Our researchers provide expertise to industry and public authorities on energy-efficient buildings and intelligent networks for a sustainable urban environment. This includes, for example, smart grids and advanced district heating and cooling.

Combining forces in research into the next generation, thin-film solar cells. Solliance was founded with that goal in 2010. The research organization is a joint venture of ECN, TNO, Holst Centre and imec. Together with the academic partners TU Eindhoven, University of Hasselt, TU Delft and Forschungszentrum Jülich, the research institutes plays a significant role in global research into the solar technology of the future.
